The Trevor Project
Brand Illustrations System

As Creative Director for The Trevor Project, Nat was tasked with finding a solution to replace all brand illustrations with no external budget and a legal-binding deadline. The end result was a versatile brand illustration system designed in-house which enabled the team to create quick-turn graphics for social media, fundraising campaigns and marketing materials, while bringing a cohesive and consistent look to the brand. Additionally, Ryan created alt text for all new brand images to ensure accessibility and Avery tracked and managed the project. The process required a lot of cross-team collaboration, an efficient tracking system and the creation of new templates and guidelines, all resulting in an elevated brand expression, a more versatile and robust system and a cost-effective creative solution.

PROJECT SUMMARY

A versatile brand illustrations system supporting quick-turn implementations and customizable characters to represent a diverse audiences.

Line drawing of various face sketches, hand gestures, window frames, plants, clouds, and miscellaneous shapes on a white background.

The system is built on pre-made interchangeable amorphous shapes which can be combined to create a unique character or scene. This approach allows for an infinite number of combinations leading to faster and easier builds, more diverse representation and less creative fatigue.

BUILDING BLOCKS
Line drawing of a person on the left with short hair and a colorful face, and abstract shapes and a person on the right with flowing lines and a phone.

Based on pre-made elements from the build library, designers can create characters by either customizing existing figures with various hair, faces, and accessories or building an entirely new figure from the inventory of shapes.

CHARACTER ASSEMBLY
Line drawing of diverse people, including a person in a wheelchair, sharing stars and clouds, with some holding stars, set against a sky with clouds, stars, the moon, and the sun.

The character building blocks can be applied in a variety of different ways to compose close-up portraits, sitting and standing figures and groups of characters.

POSES & ANGLES
A colorful illustration featuring 15 abstract patterned squares arranged in a grid, and a cartoon person holding a star in their right hand. The person is dressed in a blue patterned top, yellow pants, and black shoes.

In addition to utilizing brand colors to fill in shapes, a pattern library was created to provide more robust options for customization.

PATTERNS
Collection of colorful illustrations of household and outdoor items including windows, documents, drinks, utensils, electronic devices, headphones, weather symbols, leaves, flowers, trees, furniture, a mirror, gavel, rainbow, potted plants, gardening tools, pumpkins, a house, and a couch.

Additional objects and environment elements were added to create full illustrated scenes. The library is intended to continuously expand as new objects and scenes are created for specific creative needs.
